This mountain papaya species is native to ecuador and peru in the highlands so it should be hardy to around freezing. The species is characterized by the stipules or little curved horns on the trunk. The fruits are among the best for eating in the genus vasconcellea with an entirely edible fruit that is juicy and refreshing. Toranchi is believed to be one of the parents of the babbaco hybrid papaya which is a well known and commercialized crop in Ecuador and other parts of the world. The other parent of the famous babbaco hybrid is vasconcellea pubescens. Crossing these two species will give you the potential to create new excellent hybrid fruits.
